Car wash rules in Germany

In Germany, washing your car at home is restricted or banned in many municipalities, because dirty wash water can reach groundwater and rivers. Most people use a self-service car wash (SB-Waschbox) or an automatic car wash instead. At self-service bays, a few unwritten rules apply – mainly: don't block the bay while others are waiting.

Washing at home

There is no single nationwide rule. Water law applies everywhere, but the details are set by the federal states and your municipality (Gemeinde/Stadt). Many towns ban car washing on streets and driveways or allow only water without detergent. The German Environment Agency recommends using car wash facilities, which drain water through oil separators (Umweltbundesamt). If you're unsure, ask your local Ordnungsamt.
