Winter car care in Germany

German roads are gritted with salt in winter, and salt speeds up corrosion. Rinse it off regularly – especially wheel arches, sills and the underbody – on mild days. The ADAC advises not washing below about −10 °C, and drying door seals and locks afterwards so they don't freeze.

Winter wash step by step

  1. Pick a mild day Ideally around midday, above freezing.
  2. Rinse first High pressure on salt crust and grit – this protects the paint from a sandpaper effect.
  3. Soak Pre-wash or power foam against the grey salt film.
  4. Focus low Wheel arches, sills, behind the bumpers, lower door edges.
  5. Protect Wax program – salt water sticks less next time.
  6. Dry seals and locks Otherwise doors can freeze shut overnight.
  7. Test the brakes Brake gently a few times after washing.
